about

It’s the second release of the year on SINE Audio , and we are proud to welcome yet another debut EP from a firmly locked member of the SINE family - Sam Cunningham AKA Shadows. Our ears have been firmly locked to Shadows’ sound and progression since before we launched the label, and this four-track EP perfectly encompasses the soul and precision that permeates his music. His debut SINE single ‘Take Me / Collusion’ was an ideal introduction, yet the four-track Reflections EP shows even more musical maturity and stands tall as a complete body of work that carves his own space in the drum and bass scene.

The EP opens with title track ‘Reflections’, teasing crisp rolling drums from the get-go and enveloping you in ethereal pads and synth-work. It’s a beautifully textured, atmospheric roller with tons of depth that sets the pace for what is to come.

Akin to moments in the rave where the tunes are rolling at full pace and your head is lost in the music, ‘Fragment’ picks up the pace and moves into razor-sharp minimal territory. It’s one of the weightier of the bunch, showing off the darker influences of Shadows’ production pallet, while still containing enough atmosphere and subtle foley sounds to keep the listener immersed.

Dem Man is the gritty stepper of the EP, the main bass line and drum groove dancing off of each other as it moves through the duration. Subtle progressions, a clever use of space and faultlessly sculpted sounds combine into this late-night growler.

Closing off the EP with some more deep liquid-inspired vibes, we have the stunning ‘Orca’, a tune that feels undeniably Shadows in both its production style and melodics. An arpeggiated synth-line meanders its way through the track, with a constantly mutating bassline following suit. This one is a proper journey, and a perfect way to round of his debut
EP.
